Food Storage

Basic Items

  • Meats & Beans. Canned meat, chicken, turkey, seafood. and other protein-rich foods, such as. ...
  • Vegetables. Canned vegetables and vegetable juices. ...
  • Fruits. Canned fruits and fruit juices. ...
  • Milk. Canned, boxed or dried milk and shelf- ...
  • Grains. Ready-to-eat cereal, crackers, pretzels, ...
  • Drinks - Electrolye drinks, coffee, tea or hot chocolate

Secondary Items

  • Nuts - Pistachios, almonds, peanuts and pecans.   NOTE due to high-oil levels these can go bad quickly.
  • Protein Bars - Keep in a cool place but only last a couple of months.
  • Dried produce -  Most dried fruits can be stored for up to a year, and vegetables can last about half that. 
  • Spices - Ground spices last 3 to 5 years before lose of flavoring

Long Term Items

  • Kitchen essentials  -  Salt, Pepper and spices
  • Freeze Dried Foods - In most cases have a 25 year shelf life
  • Grains - Soft grains like (Oats, rye, quinoa) have an 8 year average.  Hard grains like (Buckwheat, corn, flax, mullet and wheat) can last from 12 to 30 years or more.
  • Beans - Under the right conditions, dry beans can last up to 10 years.  
  • Honey -  While honey maintains its peak quality for up to 12 months, it is safe to eat indefinitely,  according the the USDA.  Good for first-aid.
